Tis the season for horse judging seminars and rule book updates. Horse show judges are reminded to consider the intent of the rule – to keep the purpose of the class and the standard of what’s “correct” to guide our decisions.
In other words, to ask “What’s the point?”
A helpful hint- use words to describe the round, pattern, movement or obstacle before us in the ring.
For instance, rule books describe the big idea of conformation as balanced, structurally correct. Does that describe the horse in front of me or am I swayed by a pretty head, swan neck or a huge hip that doesn’t quite match the rest of the body?
In equitation, the spirit of the rules of rider position? Connection. Balanced. Effective. Supple.
Accuracy’s a big idea behind patterns and tests – is there precision and geometry to the pattern? Clarity to the transitions?
Using words helps a judge land on the right number.
The spirit of the law behind the letter of the law. Keeping the big picture in view – not bad advice for judges AND competitors – parents, neighbors…and drivers 🙂
