Horse show judging ethics

Just returned from the AQHA judges update in Dallas. Past president, Bill Brewer spoke of ethics in judging and set the tone with a remarkable yet relevant statement from the Bible. Ancient wisdom, yet fitting to guide the 350 judges listening as we make show ring decisions in 2020.

As I mulled over these words, here’s what I took to heart:

  • Do justly – do the right thing. Have courage to place according to the rules, and the welfare of horses and the flourishing of our industry, regardless of pressure.
  • Have mercy or empathy for competitors who are struggling. Encourage those starting out. Compassion for horses who may not share the same goals as their riders!
  • Walk humbly. No room for ego as a judge. Horse shows are pretty good at knocking the stuffing out of us.
